Photographing Fireworks

June 28, 2011 by John Rowe Leave a Comment

It’s time to start thinking about shooting fireworks as we close in on Independence Day. I thought I’d share a couple of tips for those of you interested it trying to take some photos of the upcoming fireworks.

  1. Use a tripod. Most fireworks shots require a long exposure. The tripod keeps the camera steady so your images are as sharp as possible.
  2. Use a remote shutter release or the cameras built in timer. This helps reduce camera shake when the shutter release is pushed.
  3. Long exposure. Mine are typically for 15-20 seconds.

I hope to share some photos from this year with you soon. Until then, here is a shot I took of Camp Huckins fireworks display last year. The exposure time was 20 seconds on this particular photograph. The long exposure allowed for not only the explosion to show, it also shows the path the firework took when it was launched from the beach.
